From their first known use in the 1600’s Business cards have been a staple method of introducing people to someone. Business cards (then called Tradecards in England) were used as advertising pieces and to provide directions to merchant’s stores (these cards predated formal street numbering, so they were an essential part of every business.) By the 19th century Business Cards expanded into 2 basic categories – Visiting Cards (for social calls) and Business Cards (for business/bill collecting purposes.)  There were rules of etiquette regarding who you would give them to, when and how. It was actually quite a process. The etiquette and history of business cards may not seem relevant to the 21st century but perhaps there are some cues we can take from this lost art to use in our churches today.

5 Ways you can use a Business Card in your church today:

1)       Traditional – Share contact information with a person. Why? We still need information, and it’s an opportunity to put something tangible in their hands. God can use a business card sitting in the center console of someone’s car as a reminder that He cares about them.

2)       Visiting – Members, Deacons, Elders and Staff can use cards when doing outreach. The cards would still have all the church branding, but a space on the back for a name, phone and possibly email address of the person handing out the card. By using your branding, the card is still tied to the church, but not to a specific person/use.

3)       General Invitation to your church. Why? It’s small, it’s simple, it will fit in a wallet, and it has room for just enough information to be really useful.

4)       Event ticket. Why? Again, because of its size, Bus cards are perfect to use as tickets/promotional pieces for an event or service. Having trouble with balanacing attendance during multiple Easter or Christmas services? Use these as “tickets” that you ask people to take, indicating which service they and their family/friends will attend. It makes their commitment more tangible and helps you plan.

5)       Turn it into a magnet. Even modern stainless steel kitchen appliances are still magnetic. Keeping your church name in the kitchen is a great place to be. It’s the most used room in the house, and your church name is a great way to hold up that perfect spelling test on the refrigerator.
